How Fitting

Number 99 in entries and it’s the night before the superbowl. Actually, today as of right now is the Super Bowl!

I talk big, but realistically, I’ve never seen the Eagles get this far in my lifetime. I’ve lived and died with this team – as everyone knows I still have a grudge against Vai – I’ve seen them trampled in playoff games and have seen amazing games (Eagles v. New Orleans, or v. the Lions) – I watched all the games except the one Cardinals game blacked out during that horrible 3-11 season (which was actually predetermined the previous season, when the team failed to score a touchdown in the last four games by the offense, including the 14-0 loss to San Fran).

I’ve seen Bubby Brister, Jim McMahon, Randall Cunningham, Doug Pederson, Ty Detmer, his brother Koy, A.J. Feeley and of course, McNabb.

Freddie Solomon past his prime, Irving Fryar the only Pro Bowler that 3-11 season, Vai fumbling, Vai fumbling, Vai fumbling…

It’s amazing how much a fixture Eagles football has been in my life. And I’ve been playing it low key, so I think. But this game does mean a lot to me, and of course I’ll be watching it all night. To the bitter, or joyous end.

One can only hope they win. I can’t even fathom if they’ll win or lose, it is going to be a close game. This is the first exciting football game I’ve looked forward to in a long time. These are the two most balanced teams in all of football – I think this game is actually going to be a classic. Going to be a Classic, as in, The Catch type annals of history.

And it’s amazing that D.McNabb is only the third quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. For a sport that has mostly african americans, it’s amazing in 2005 he’s only the third.

It’s strange, sports wise my heart does quicken at the idea of Super Bowl and Eagles. It truly does. I’m estatic. It’s kind of like the Red Sox, except not as long and we’re not nearly as pitiful.

And I’m aware that Philly isn’t nearly as lovable as Boston. They can go f*ck themselves. I’m really excited, and don’t care if 49 other states are rooting for the Patriots.

At this point, after talking to Lisa’s Mom, it occurred to me that I may not see this moment again for another 25 years. I’ll be 49 if it continues this way. It just takes a couple players to demand for xx million, a couple injuries and that be the end of that. One of the greatest defenses, the ’92 Eagles defense, was dismantled for that very reason. That was a Super Bowl bound year too.

Go figure.

Here we are in 2005, and all of Philadelphia’s hopes are riding on it. There’s the millions of Eagles fans who are dying (at least one, literally) to see the Eagles win the big one. Then there’s the other few that just want the misery related to Eagles failures to end.

Then there’s a few that don’t care, but we don’t care about them.

Finally, I guess, I’m back on the bandwagon. Better late than never. I mean, they went 13-3 this year, not 3-13 back in ’98. I can tell my kids that I saw them Eagles actually get to the big game. I mean, I can say the same about the Sixers but this isn’t a basketball town. Not by a longshot (not like Indiana is, or New York).

In sum, Go Eagles.
