A query before bed

How do you meet random people on the internet anymore? It seems social networking sites are mainly to connect to people you already know or have already met. But what if you just want to speak to some random person?

Is this an odd sort of thing? Before AIM became popular, there was ICQ. And if you made yourself available for chat, random people could message you and strike up a conversation. It seems that option no longer exists in ICQ.

I always enjoyed warm evenings randomly messaging. It’s a shame that sort of thing has been relegated to chat rooms, message boards and IRC. It’s not quite the same.

I think some people use MySpace that way. The problem is that the people who are foolish enough to leave their profiles open to the public and actually respond to strangers tend to be… not that bright.
