I’m about to go to bed, but I just wanted to post what might not have been, had I sold the laptop:
Had I sold the laptop, I would not have installed SuSE Linux 9.2, and not found Linux ‘heaven’.
I’m not sure what I’ll do when SuSE Linux 9.3 becomes available for the general public. That’s probably six months from now, buuuuuuut… I do want to install it only because they’ve added even more laptop based goodness.
Why so excited? It’s because what Linux can do that Windows can’t… first, there’s a specific powermode set for acoustic, so the laptop will run silently, no matter what. This speeds down the laptop drive, the dvd drive, and throttles back the CPU so that the machine is virtually silent.
Secondly, there’s software 3d sound – as in, I can crank up 3D, and my 2.1 speaker setup sounds like surround sound. Imagine my surprise, how much better music sounded under Linux.
Oh, and for whatever reason Linux can control the laptop’s sound card better than Windows. Before, I had to fiddle with the speaker volume being one notch above completely silent so that it wouldn’t be too loud (these speakers are indeed ridiculously loud, especially for a laptop). Here, no such issue. Huzzah.
Enough fiddling, good night.
