I posted this entry a month ago regarding the purchase of running shoes. Unlike most things, I was determined to not simply sit back and waste that purchase. I’m happy to report I’m running four times a week and I can run a full mile.
Unlike DE, this isn’t a flat track. There’s an 85 ft ascent from the corner of tyson and lawrence through the bend at Mt. Pleasant, and the drop is quite steep from Fairmont down to Harriet.
The run is extremely tough with the jogging stroller; I only do the loop to Howell, and even then I only run .4 out of the .6 mile loop. Interesting note: it’s harder to use a jogging stroller going downhill than uphill; the stroller + toddler amounts to about fifty pounds, and jogging strollers are designed for the least amount of friction possible. Couple that with the oversized wheels and the amount of resistance it puts up is nil. The other note is that running with a stroller kills posture and overall efficiency, and as far as I can tell there’s no way to fix that. But Nora likes it, so when the weekends roll around I just can’t say no.
I want to run more often, but I have a flat foot and I usually have to give it two days rest between several days of running. Orthotics are a mixed bag; my troubles aren’t nearly as serious as most people, and some have noted that orthotics make the problem worse, not better. A lot of people recommend New Balance or Asics; I tried a number of pairs and they’re all uncomfortable. I’m just hoping this new hobby doesn’t given me arthritis or some other ailment.
