Mini Milestones and Other Things

For the first time in a week, the Comcast network didn’t crash. But the Comcast stock fell $.40 cents, and probably will some more if they knew what I knew. How embarassing.

Rather than get in trouble for publishing what I know, I’ll let you ask me in person. Though, if you’ve been reading broadbandreports.com, you might get an idea of what was happening. AND, the kind of venom people have about their High Speed Internet.

I can’t really understand some people’s frustration with the loss of service. Realistically, while it is frustrating, it really was just four days out of the month where service was truly interrupted. And to say four days would imply it was 96 hours, which it was certainly not.

Granted, I’ve always had a laid back attitude about the internet, as in, I can live without it and many a time I invite it. Computers, at least to me, are more trouble than they are worth and how easy they’ve made lives is truly debatable.

Ever since I’ve started work I have curbed my home computer usage significantly (and if you’ve emailed me, you’ve probably noticed the lag). I guess having to deal with other persons’ computer related issues does that to you. Indeed sad.

Before I let this topic slide, I’d like to point out a few things. Firstly, switching to DSL is hardly a resolution – as a former DSL subscriber, their methods of tech support is sending you a new modem, and tell you to call back in six hours (no joke). Secondly, their service is $24.95, however, that’s for about 34% the speed of HSI for nearly half the price. Second(a), 1.5 is the absolute max, and if you live more than 200 feet from the starting station, you will not get that speed, no matter how hard you try. And finally, Verizon also suffered a loss of service in January, similar to Comcast’s.

I personally don’t think I’m biased, even having worked at Comcast, only for the fact that I used DSL for three years, and then have used Comcast for two, and the difference is very noticeable.

At the absolute very, very least, bittorrent doesn’t work properly with DSL. How would Lisa and I have watched ‘Committed’ all season if we had DSL?

Second milestone, and not nearly as cynical – Lisa and I made a mile run without stopping, together, for the first time. Granted, we’ve only run a couple times so far (all things considered, every time the weather has been good we’ve run). Lisa nor I have been able to run a whole mile without stopping until yesterday, and there’s a euphoria that isn’t quite the same for biking or the like (especially considering we did it together in lock-step).

Forgive me if it seems cheesy, but it was terribly exciting. I know Lisa was excited too, and later today we plan on doing it again.

Taxes have been filed, and for the first time it was filed completely electronically. There’s something chic about sitting on the couch in one’s sleeping garments and completing taxes (state and federal) in less than 20 something minutes. Very commercial esque, I think.

Another smaller milestone: after April 13th, we’ve run past 150 comments. That’s not so bad for a site with nothing but a weblog and stuffed animal violence and Peja relaying the story of the destruction of earth.

It’s nice to see this site get visited so frequently, even if it is Mare and Lisa and Lisa and Lisa reloading the page several times a day (mostly Lisa). (I have no clue if Mare really does – that’s my only explanation for 750+ visits a month).

That being said, if you haven’t visited the new ‘Lucky Money’ in the gallery, you’re truly missing out. I love how it’s been redone, and I think you’re sorely missing out if you don’t get a chance to even glance at it.

Yes, shameless promotion, but I get nothing from it except a sense of accomplishment (especially for stuffed animal theatre – to this day, Jaya nor I quite understand what we were thinking, but the end result is fairly hilarious).

That’s it for me. Hopefully today will be like yesterday (which means, very easy) and my day off comes quickly.
