I left work early because Lisa was sick. As soon as I got home, Lisa went to bed. It was just the Tiny and me. Because Lisa has been in various stages of sick (today was allergies) I’ve had a chance for a lot more one on one time than usual. It’s been awesome.
She’s such a serious girl. I ask her about her day, and she’ll go on about the various things she did. Once I asked, “really?,” and she looked me straight in the eye and replied, “Yes. Really.”
Lately we take walks every night together. Where we go is pretty random. We usually go out looking for bugs or flowers or sticks or whatever she has her mind set on. Today was bugs (ants specifically) but there was no sign of that. She’s also practicing looking for cars before crossing the street.
One of her endearing phrases is when I say “goodness,” she’ll respond immediately with “gracious”. I’ve been working hard on cleaning up my language around her when I caught her muttering “damn it” under her breath when she couldn’t open a yogurt cup.
Today we ended up at the elementary school; we looked for bugs, watched people play baseball, played on the slides and headed home when the sky darkened. As soon as we walked under the backdoor awning, it immediately started to pour.
Another favorite pastime is sitting on my lap on the back step and watching the rain come down. We were treated to a lightning show; Nora projected her fear on the trees – “Tree is scared, daddy.” Towards the end of the storm, she was yelling to the trees “It’s ok tree! Nora’s here!” Her sweetness gets me all choked up.
Little girl doesn’t seem to care where we go; she’s the outdoorsy type. The whole walk took over an hour, just because she wants to look at the leaves and the rocks and the usual fauna and foliage. Those walks are the highlight of my day. She does remember that certain parks have certain activities that other parks do not have: the park closer to our house has the ‘elmo’; the park near her future school has ‘the dirt’ (baseball diamond); Rittenhouse Square has ‘chase the birdies’; Central Park has ‘the boats and the turtle on the branch’; Tompkins Square Park has the old guy who fell asleep holding a cigarette and ‘mommy wake him up? no, let him sleep’… we’re not going back to that park. I can’t believe that I hung around that park every day. We were there because there’s this little ice cream shop that has the best soft serve twists anywhere ever. Nora agreed, best ice cream ever… though, any time she has ice cream it’s the best ice cream ever. Ah, to be two. When I grow up I want to be her.
