Brief (P)Reviews

“Finished” Drill Dozer today. For whatever reason, this game was not on any of the top 10/25/50/100 lists. It’s definitely in my top five. The top five are as follows: Street Fighter Alpha 3u, Ninja Five-0, Advance Guardian Heroes, Drill Dozer, and Mario Tennis.

I was impressed by the number of puzzles they managed to fit into the game. The game topped off at 5 and a half hours – each level took anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

It’s one of those games that completely shocked and awed me – it probably should’ve shown up on a console and should’ve had multiple sequels (the ending was designed as such); alas, I guess the IP is dead.

I say “finished” because once you reach the main ending, you’ve really only played half of the available levels. By collecting chips throughout the levels, you can unlock bigger and better tools which opens up previously unreachable parts of levels.

For a perfectionist, this game can easily top ten hours – which is impressive for a handheld platformer.

Looking at the bigger picture, half of the games I’ve finished in the last year were GBA games. After all the games I’ve had the good fortune to stumble across, I can say with certainty that the GBA was the last and best 2D system. I’m hard pressed to find any 2D games on any generation that are as fine as those I’ve played here – the console is an absolute technical marvel.

That is all.

Armed and Dangerous is a weird sort of game. The game itself is pretty monotonous and the gameplay has absolutely nothing to do with the story; but the game is worth playing solely for the cutscenes. They’re hysterical, and the story is compelling. The game has had some pretty cool moments like fighting off an army trying to break through your stronghold, and probably has the greatest weapon ever conceived (the land shark gun, fast forward 1:06), but there’s a reason why this was a bargain bin game. Even for the time, graphics were subpar and the gameplay is overly simplistic (Deus Ex came out in 2000, so that’s my standard).

I think I would’ve preferred to buy a DVD of the story, rather than it being broken up by goofy gameplay.
