Some sports talk

Eagles: They’re an up and down team. If they don’t blow the opponent out, they’re going to lose. Statistically, if the score is within seven, they’re likely to lose.

Worse still: Ellis Hobbs is out for the season. Joselio Hanson is out for a month (substance abuse is the likely culprit). Hobbs’ injury is scary, given that so little was made of it at the time. He suffered a spinal injury, and the question becomes whether he can play football again – I believe they think he can walk again, but he’s only a year older than I am. I can’t imagine being forced to retire from the only profession you’ve known and look at that expanse of life ahead of you.

The Eagles won’t be winning anything this season. They were the trendy pick, but this kind of thing is very hard to overcome. They have no depth at the CB position, and have rookies in big spots on the offense (Westbrook has been on and off injured this whole season, leaving McCoy as the starting RB). It’s a very hot and cold team. Without a major winning streak, they aren’t going to do much better than 10-6. Given how McNabb’s and Westbrook’s contracts were designed, I don’t doubt that both won’t be here in 2010. Westbrook is definitely gone. McNabb was pretty close to leaving, but for Kolb’s terrible performance last season. This season he was 2-1, so there’s faith that he can step in as the starter.

Flyers look woeful. They look like a team that needs a coaching change. They don’t look good out there. Some games they play to their potential. Other games… ugh.

The Sixers aggravate me the most. I strongly detest Eddie Jordan. When Elton Brand is on the floor, the Sixers put up the best defense. For whatever reason, Eddie Jordan refuses to play Brand. He refuses to run plays for Brand when he’s out there, and he’s pulled him for the final quarter three games in a row. Based on Jordan’s comments, he’s basically washed his hands of Brand, and considers him Stefanski’s problem.

Further, Thaddeus Young seems to have regressed. He looks terrible on both sides of the floor. Jrue Holiday has played well, but even when playing well he’s been pulled in favor of Lou Williams – and you know my feelings on the fellow. He’s terrible, and he’s done nothing to prove otherwise.

They never pass the ball to Kapono when he’s open for the three, even though he’s the best three point shooter in the NBA. On the flip side, the Sixers refuse to defend the three.

I strongly feel that this team is better than the way they play. I put this squarely on Eddie Jordan. I didn’t like the hire, I don’t like him in general, I don’t think the Princeton offense is a fit for the talent that the Sixers have.

In all due seriousness, Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala are two excellent two-way potentially all-star players. Dalembert looks good when he has Brand to back him up, and looks terrible when he’s alone. Speights is an offensive wunderkind. Willie Green and Lou Williams need to be buried at the far end of the bench. Jrue Holiday should get his due.

The players can’t decide when they go in and out of games. The players don’t draw up the plays. I hope Eddie Jordan gets his pink slip by mid-season. The Sixers had a lot of options for the coaching gig, and they picked wrongly. We knew it then, and we definitely know it now.
