So, we used to have this game where, when I was changing Nora’s diaper, I’d pretend her foot was a phone and we were calling all sorts of people and telling them a story. The story would be whatever Nora wanted to tell them – for the longest while, it was about a turtle she saw in Central Park.
The game arose when Nora was crying on the changing table and nothing would calm her down. She likes phones (or rather, the idea of phones – she rarely talks to anyone on the phone), and she likes make believe, so of course it was an immediate hit. For a while, we were doing it every night, she liked it that much.
Obviously, now that she’s potty trained, she hasn’t had a diaper changed in a long while. So last night, as a throwback, I played this game while she was on my lap. She got into it too, telling me that we were speaking to grandma and that she wanted to tell her about the turtle, when suddenly she shot up and said:
“Daddy that’s silly! That’s not a phone, it’s a foot!”
…she got off of my lap, and that was that. They grow up so fast. Sigh.
