Reviews!

Because I have nothing else to write about, and it’s been a while.

Angry Birds (iPhone/iTouch): It is a charming physics game. Mean pigs have stolen the birds’ eggs, and it’s up to you to retrieve them by knocking down their fortresses. You launch the birds via slingshot. They all have some special ability to boot. It’s like a cross between Worms and Boom Blox. It’s ridiculous fun, and only 99c at the moment. The game has seen massive updates, and technically since the last update I’m nowhere near beating it. Still, I consider it complete when I see the credits roll.

Asphalt 5 (iPhone/iTouch): I’m quoting myself here – “I purchased Asphalt 5 for $5. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else. I purchased it because I have ‘kind of fond’ memories of playing Asphalt Urban GT in St. Martin while Lisa was laid up and sick; this isn’t that. It’s buggy and quite too easy.” It’s an arcade racer. Look for my detailed review under user ‘htp24′ in iTunes.

Hero of Sparta (iPhone/iTouch): A badass God of War knock-off without those annoying puzzles. Graphically, it’s superb. The controls can be somewhat finicky but nothing too annoying. It sounds like an early 16-bit game (I’d put it at the same level as Altered Beast – yes, they are that bad) but it really retains the epic feel from God of War. It’s sad really given how much they blatantly ripped from the GoW franchise, but then again Sony wasn’t about to let their franchise appear on a competing portable. For $2, it’s 100% worth it.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii): I love this game. This title + Madworld makes the Wii worth owning. I only had to slog through three years of mediocre titles before 2009 rewarded me for my diligence. It’s not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination. I have a relatively short attention span for games in general but this one has held my interest for 26 hours (and counting). This, like Sword of the Berserk (DC) and Jak & Daxter (PS2) has compelled me to go through and see all the alternate endings.

Have I sold you on it yet? Muramasa is an action-RPG that has you taking on the roles of Momohime and Kisuke. Both use the Oboro style but neither came upon the style willingly… and that’s all I will say on that front. Throughout the game, you defeat bosses and earn different demon blades. Instead of a skill tree there is a blade tree, where you can forge swords with different strengths and abilities. There are 107 swords total, but you can only carry three at once.

The battles are purely action based, but require some tactical planning as blades wear down when you block or get hit, which causes them to break. Since battles move very quickly and bosses battles can be fierce, there’s quite a bit of equipment and supply management mid-battle.

If I simply played through the credits, I would’ve missed all the brilliant details that make this game shine. In fact, my opinion of this game increased several times over having watched the second endings of both characters.

I had the choice of starting this or Mass Effect 2; this game made me forget completely about ME2, it’s just that good.

If you click on the entry you’ll see that I’ve installed a plugin that brings up related posts. I don’t know how accurate it is or how it calculates how one entry is related to the other. That being said, it’s fun to see how much of your time I’ve wasted over the last six and a half years.
