Of Cars and Computers

I’m installing SuSE on my desktop machine, because 1) I have an xbox so gaming isn’t very important on it anymore and 2) XP still is crap.

This is the first time in… six years that I’ve installed Linux on a desktop. Why does that matter? Because installing anything on a laptop is a nightmare and a half. It’s proprietary everything. But, desktops are all standard – well, at least the ones you build yourself. I know exactly what’s in my desktop, right down to the southbridge. And so does Linux. Installs for laptops take over two, three hours (still better than windows). On desktops, under 40 minutes with a full system and all applications (and 10 minutes is actual work, the rest is the computer doing its thing).

I’m hoping that I can burn CDs in Linux (as some people have reported doing). Let me back up – under XP, I can no longer burn CDs. Just DVDs. I’m not entirely sure if it’s the os or the drive; it makes no sense that it would be the drive if it can read DVDs, which have smaller grooves and require a more precise laser. I’ve tried a couple types of CD-Rs, all have the same issue.

So, here’s hoping against hope.

Exciting news – the LCD arrived. Not so exciting – it’s the wrong color. It’s closer to tan than it is gray. Now, I’m thinking of just getting a can of duplicolor and fixing it that way. Though, I quite frankly don’t care that much. I could also just hack up my old cheap visor and fix it on top of this one, so that it’s even more stealth, which is one very seriously contemplated possibility.

Toyota has released images of the xB RS 3.0. I’m impressed.

Check it out here.

Now, as I undestand it, those LCDs and radio are standard. Outside of being a thief’s dream, the equipment is a huge upgrade over the previous equipment. They’ve moved from a humdrum Pioneer system to a very, very nice Alpine DVD system. That, in and of itself, makes the car much more worthwhile. The LCDs in the headrests aren’t really my thing – I’ve always prefered roof mounted simply because passengers can’t view anything in the back if the seat is even slightly reclined (as I tend to do when I’m not driving).

I like the color, but not the grill. Thankfully, they haven’t made the thing stupidly big, ala the Element.

I’m in love.
(be patient, it might take a little while to load)

At first I was a bit taken aback. What the hell is it? It’s the Scion F3R – a minivan with aggressive styling. After looking at all the pictures, I can’t help but say that I’m in love.

First, I’ve always wanted a minivan – when the matrix was wrecked, I was going to buy my dad’s Odyssey, until Lisa steered me clear (though, with good reason). This vehicle is just – amazing – simply because of the interior configuration. It can be the regular captains chairs, or it can be lounge seating, whatever. Roadtrips would *never* be the same. You could easily sleep four people in there, on the seats. AND! it’s a hybrid! What more do you want?

Now, they plan to release it in the next three years or so? If so, I’m so there. :-D

That’s it for now. Now, off to work.
