Quite an angering title there, eh? But it’s certainly very very very true. Last night the Flyers’ season came to an end, and it wasn’t a hard fought end either. A few weeks ago the Sixers’ season came to an end without any post season games. And a few months before that? The Eagles stumbled to a 6 and 10 record.
The Phillies? I haven’t liked the Phillies since oh… 97, and I don’t intend to ever like them. They’re a bunch of losers. It’s an attitude that permeates the whole club. I’m a Nats person, by the way. They need to dump all these crap players that talk big but don’t perform – then maybe I’ll like them. But right now the Phillies are more content with stroking the egos of almost all-stars (you’re not an all star to me if you haven’t gotten your team past the regular season).
So my picks for hockey and basketball are: the Carolina Hurricanes, and the L.A. Clippers. The ‘canes because there are a lot of former Flyers on that team including my favorite forward, Rod Brind’Amour, and the Clippers because I’ve been a long time fan (Elton Brand made me a convert). Ask Lisa regarding my love for ‘da Clippas’.
What drives me batty about all this is that I thought the Sixers would make it to the post season and the Flyers would do a lot better than they did. Granted, it assumed that both could play as teams and the latter would have their best player and best defensemen (Primeau and Johnnson) but it didn’t happen.
In Philadelphia, we have high expectations. But here’s the problem – we have no reason to have said high expectations. We’ve gone on forever waiting for a franchise championship. The Eagles went to the SB (2004), the Flyers to the Stanley Cup (97), Sixers to the Finals (2001), and the Phillies to the World Series (93), though that last one is past 10 years ago, so it shouldn’t technically count – but we haven’t exactly made an argument in this city that any of our teams should be considered ‘elite’. Getting to the game before the big game (Eagles) mean you’re the third or fourth best team in the league. The Flyers regularly get to the post season, and last time hockey was around it was just one game away (that was a great hockey team – but they were built for the rules before the new CBA… they’re too old now for the new game we call hockey). The Sixers? A lot of fun to watch, but they’ve been straddling the line between being competitive and rebuilding. Billy King hasn’t decided which direction to go, and it’s been an unmitigated disaster since the team of 2001 was disbanded.
So, this spring and summer its all about draft picks, trades and rumors. The city of Philadelphia does well with all those things – always in the midst of something big. But when it comes time to play? Man… we are losers.

If you haven’t seen the killing that Stephen Colbert made at the White House dinner, you must watch. My god, it was brutal. Hysterically brutal.
The short ram intake is in the car now. It’s only a 1.5L motor @94whp, so I doubt it broke 100whp, or maybe it’s close – it is definitely noticeable though. The front end lifts up when I floor it. AND I’m still getting over 33-34 mpg, so I’m happy.
If you didn’t read Lisa’s weblog about our weekend (the exciting: seeing Ilana and commiserating; May Day – the terrible: the dinner party), do so now. She also has a link to Stephen Colbert’s brilliance (thank you Stephen! huevos… no no, baloncestos grandes!).
