SUSE 10.1 – Survey Says?

I don’t know. I can’t get the damned thing to installed. I burned 2 DVDs, and neither would work (is it the DVD? Is it the DVD drive on the laptop?). I checked the MD5Sums several times, they came out clean.

So I downloaded the CD versions. At some point on CD 1 the whole thing craps out and killed my master boot record. Now I can’t boot into Windows, either (it’s still there, though. I know how to fix it. Just don’t feel like it, yet).

I’m thinking of a doing a network install, but right now I’m not happy with what Suse did in this regard. I absolutely loved everything from 9.0 up to 9.3, but wasn’t thrilled with 10.0 (it was good, but not “great”, as every release from 9.0 on had been), and definitely upset about how the 10.1 install went. The installer has taken a step back as well, which is less than thrilling.

I think I’ll keep the discs around and try it on the desktop and see where that goes. But so far? I guess wait until 10.2. Or download 10.0. Unlike most Suse distros, this one is really lacking the polish that I’ve come to expect from them. And really, it’s quite surprising, because I’ve always put the fit and finish of Suse above Windows and even Mac OS X.

Oh well.

In other news, I couldn’t fix the LCD. The ribbon was much too small and the liquid trace much too thing. I’m *thinking* of one more go (just for the sake of getting it to work) but I did also win an auction for a new LCD (which incidentally is cheaper than what I paid for the broken one). It all works out in the end, insurance is almost $100 cheaper a month now that I turned 25.

Still highly irritated and upset with myself for such a cataclysmic failure. I’m much better than that, or so I like to think. Sigh, 1000 times over.

Good night.

  1. I’m caving P… I’m investing into a Mac. I was thinking to wait until OS X Leopard comes out, but screw it… I’m going shopping for a G5 soon.

Sorry to hear about your computer/LCD problems…I can imagine how frustrating it was to be working on the installation and have it go crazy on you. I hope it gets worked out soon!
