Need for Space

Ever notice how much space we need? And how it changes as we get older?

I mean, part of it has very much to do with the fact that we grow. But for every inch that we grow, the amount of space we need grows exponentially.

When I was younger, a ride with my bike consisted of a lap around the block. I mean, that was more than enough; that slightly more than a quarter mile was long, by my six year old standards. But now, I’m not sure I’d be content with it on a regular basis (maybe for nostalgic reasons, though). My bike route now is eight miles. How’d a quarter mile get to 8 miles (and counting)?

I don’t think my problem is a unique one. Rather, it could just be an American thing. As we get older, we want everything bigger. More power, more space, more everything. Not that we technically need that much more, but just to make ourselves feel better.

When does the need for space decrease? When does the fixation end with acres and begin with feet? When is legroom for our 5’6″-5’8″ frames enough?
