That phone thing

So it looks like the Verizon thing is going to happen. Which is good, I guess, since my parents have Verizon, as do M&M, and R&D will soon as well (get on the boat, J&B) – meaning, all calls between all of us are free. Which, by and large means nothing, because no one calls anyone. But it does mean that I can have calls forwarded from work and not worry about running up the minutes (around the time we bought the house, I ran up 700 minutes, on the dot).

Speaking of phones, some things came to light after Apple’s iPhone announcement. First, here’s Synaptics’ Onyx, which is very much like Apple’s iPhone except the concept was developed last year. Ok, small company, not a lot of talk… probably licensing the technology to Apple…

…and now we come to learn that the iPhone dispute isn’t resolved? Hmm… oh. For those not aware, Cisco possesses that name, and at the time of the announcement, no agreement had been struck officially. Very, very crass on Apple’s part…

Ok, so I take back the innovative part about the iPhone, and I take back calling it an iPhone (henceforth called the Apple i…Rotary). So, if one were to get the iRotary, what does it entail? Well, it requires a two or three year committment with Cingular, AND a data plan, on top of the $500 cost. If we get the phone unlocked, it may work on T-Mobile’s network, minus the voicemail visual cue. That’s in no official capacity of course, since there is no such partnership between the two.

Also lost in the equation is a standalone touchscreen iPod. I mean, what if you don’t want a phone? What if you want all the other gimmicky stuff, like Google Maps and the 4GB MP3 player?

And for $500, it doesn’t support 3G, which is the next tier network for cell phone broadband.

Don’t worry verizon users, as long as Verizon sticks with CDMA, we’ll be stuck with ugly flip phones.

Now that the picture over the iRotary is hazy again, lets turn our attention to the OpenMoko, which is another touchscreen phone, but has that gorgeous symbian-esque interface that I absolutely love. It’s a Linux based device, which means it’ll likely be hackable from the get go, and heck of a lot cheaper.

We made good on the promise – Denby is a wonderful baby product tester.

For those wondering, Denby is a very gentle creature, by nature. Denby generally doesn’t mind wearing or trying these things out, and *usually* he gets interested in whatever we’re doing – for instance, with the stroller, he didn’t immediately jump out after we started pushing him around the house. He’s naturally very inquisitive (if you couldn’t tell).

Peja shows his appreciation in blood. While we appreciate Peja taking the time out to tell us how we feels, we generally opt for Denby to try these products.

Besides, Denby is a fifteen pound kitty, mostly muscle. He’s going to be bigger than the baby!

Finally, while it’s not becoming of me to say this, I do actually hope that the Eagles lose against the Saints. I’m not the only one. And the reasons are the same. New Orleans needs this, and that franchise needs it. It’s a feel good story, a true Cinderella story (as far as that goes in sports, anyway).

I’m glad that the Eagles beat the Giants, though. While M_m likes to think that the Giants lost it, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Giants simply aren’t a good team, and the Eagles won it when it mattered.

But the Saints, man, do they have a backstory. Can you imagine playing in a stadium where one year ago it was where refugees took shelter? That your home town is still ravaged? Holy. crap.

I would like the Eagles to try for the Super Bowl next year, just not this year.

What I would like to see are the Eagles making it a lively competition, but ‘let’ the Saints win.

Yes, I love Philadelphia sports, and I love the Eagles, but think of the greater good! Think of what this does for not just New Orleans, but the U.S.!

So, for this week, and the rest of this season, go Saints!

I don’t know if I want Verizon though. :-\ What if it doesn’t work at our house? What if you hate it as much as you did last time?

    Sigh.
