Who Has It Worse?

So, it’s October and it’s baseball. I hate the Cards, because I hate Scott Rolen. Ok, I dislike him immensely. There’s two sides to the issue. The first was that Rolen had said he’d be out of the Phillies before Bowa became manager. And second, he irritated the hell out of me the way he left.

At the same time, the Phillies are run by ineptitude, so one can see why he wanted to leave.

Still. He bailed on this team. And I hope the Cards lose the world series.

Besides, I like Curt Schilling. He was traded to a contender to get a chance, and he capitalized. And tonight, he did it again. That guy is gutsy, and amazing. I hope he wins another.

So who is worse, Boston or Philly?

New York is used to winning. Mostly the Yankees – the Jets, Giants and Knicks aren’t as good as they were in the 90′s, but they’re close – and the Mets just flat out suck. As badly as the Phils.

My argument is that Boston has it better off than the city of Brotherly Love.

You see, not only is the city the home of the Patriots, they also have the future WS winners, the Sox, whose management is several hundred times better than the Phils.

I guess having a rivalry with the Yanks will do that to you.

Not only that, the Patriots are perenial winners. The Celtics had Larry Bird in the mid 90′s. And the Bruins aren’t so shabby.

But, the Philly teams – Sixers, Flyers and Eagles – the latter two especially – seem to get to the cusp every time, but end up falling short.

It’s not very nice to have NO sports team (rather, major sports team) to fall back on to say ‘well, at least we’re good at that’.

There’s no hockey this year, the Eagles, if they played the way they played today (which is very possible) will not get to the Super Bowl, the Phils, well they suck, and the Sixers will be very fun to watch but lets be realistic – the West is full of big men, who can shoot the ball at will. The Sixers have a lot of young, great talent, but without a true center (where’s Mutombo when you need him?) the Sixers are nobodies. They’ll get the 8 spot in the playoffs this year – not much else. It’ll be exciting. But with Shaq playing for the Heat? Nah, not this year.

It was easier to be a Philly fan last week when the Eagles played well. Now there’s that seed of doubt. The Browns aren’t that good, yet it had to be played out in OT. Good teams crush not so good teams. The eagles did that. Now, I know it’s hard to focus every single week in football – it’s just simply impossible. But, This is a game they could’ve won easily.

The Eagles have sat it out several times in the past – I think the only time where they really truly brought their A game and lost was against the Rams three years ago. The last two – come on. The Bucs, well, everyone rolled over for them – low expectations. The Jags? Please.

We need a title in this city. This is a city starved for one. It’s been 20+ years since any title came through this city. I think Chicago may have it worse, though – but Chicago is one of those cities that came around a bit later than Philadelphia, in all avenues of sports. And the Blackhawks won a Cup more recently than the Flyers.

Philadelphia is the southernmost big ticket hockey town. I love hockey. It’s my second favorite sport behind basketball and the Sixers. The Eagles, well, they’re right about the Phils in third. I like football, but the Eagles have me doubting them every week. That’s what happens when you get the NFC Championship game and lose it three years in a row.

It’s driving me batty that there’s no hockey. And apparently it’s annoying the hell out of a lot of other Philly people too – they’re now replaying Flyers games from years past on CSN every wednesday night. And we get more feeds of AHL hockey. But it’s not the same, especially since the Flyers had a decent chance last year. They took the eventual Stanley Cup winners to seven games – and, hell, the Flyers were decimated with injuries. This year may have been much better.

They need to fix the NHL though. 82 games is too many. They should shorten it to say, 30 – and then have the playoffs. Every game would be meaningful, and injuries wouldn’t be so much of an issue. By the time the 82 game marathon has been run, many players are just exhausted, unless the teams have the good fortune to rest their players for the last couple of weeks (if they have that luxury).

Not that my opinion matters at all, mind you. The owners and the players have made that very clear.

Oh well.

There’s a variety of subjects I’d like to get to – but I promised Lisa I’d be in bed by 1AM. So,

Good night.
