The Call

Lisa calls me when she picks up Nora to let me know that she has her, and then she fills me in on her day. Nora always asks for the phone after the call to play with – she is daddy’s little girl of course, and she loves her gadgets. She asks for the phone by saying “I want the hello! please! hello!” In this case, ‘the hello’ is the phone. It’s so cute that I’ve taken to calling it the hello, too.

But today, today was special. She made her first phone call to me. Lisa had just called so I feared that it was an emergency, but after a few seconds I realized it was probably Nora, so I had my usual one sided conversation with her. But today, what did she say? “I love you too!”

Yes, the first time she spoke on the phone was to me and the first time she made a call was to me. I am that lucky.

She is, by far, the coolest person I know. She has a lot of spunk. A few days ago Lisa and I were bathing her, and I was pouring water on her head. She stood up and said “STOP DADDY! No wawa on head!” and she patted her head to indicate where I was not allowed to pour the ‘wawa’. And also today, when I got home she told me that “birds come and go quaw quaw!” and she started jumping up and down. She can now jump, by the way. She does it really well. And she can dance!

She’s fun. She’s insanely fun. I read once that eighteen months is the height of the toddler tantruming and possibly the hardest, but it’s been the exact opposite. She has her moments, and in public she can make Lisa and I look like blithering idiots, but the other 99% of the time is unbridled fun. She’s such a free spirit – she likes playing with dolls and stuffed animals but also fire trucks and video games; she absolutely LOVES coloring and playing outside – she’s a free spirit and neither of us want to rein that in at all.

I read a craiglist rave once where this dad thought early on that the baby was best if sold on the black market… but he said once his little girl said I love you, it was all over. I understand that kind of feeling now. The first year was Nora and mommy forming a bond, and I was generally on the outside looking in. Now? We’re buddies. I thought that nothing could top her grabbing my finger (right out of the womb no less) but she keeps topping it. Oh man…

She is SO Daddy’s little girl. Every single day when I pick her up and put her in the car, she shouts, “Daddy!” Meaning, “call Daddy!” And then when I call you and pass along that you love her, she says, “I love you too!” And then she takes the phone when I’m done and pretends to talk to you. She loves her Daddy. :-D
